Nakhtu

Today fifteen year old Nakthu has a huge smile on her face.  Her eyes sparkle as she talks about her school and favorite subject. She shows us one of her textbooks and begins reading with confidence.

One year ago, Nakthu would walk hours per day to provide her family with water.  She frequently suffered stomach pains from drinking dirty water.  Today her family has clean water thanks to a brand new rainwater harvesting tank and biosand filter.  After school, Nakthu helps to grow fruits and vegetables in the family kitchen garden.  She also help to grow millet and wheat on their farmland.  A newly built Khadin (farming dyke) provides water for the family’s crops.

Nakthu is an avid cricket player and her favorite subjects are science and math.   She aspires to become an engineer.  Nakthu’s mother is thankful that her daughter is now closer to realizing her dreams.
