Jamna

Today, fourteen year-old Jamna’s eyes sparkle as she describes her school, teachers and friends.   She could not have imagined attending school last year as she used to walk miles to collect water for her family.   She would frequently face heat stroke walking across the desert.   Her family struggled to make ends meet.  They did not have any water source or ability grow seasonal vegetables.

Today, her family’s fortunes have been transformed.  A rainwater harvesting tank with biosand filter provides clean water.  Jamna’s mother is growing fields of wheat and millet on her own farmland.  Water from a newly constructed Khadin (farming dyke) channels rainwater to her fields.  Jamna’s mother has planted fruits and vegetables next to her rainwater harvesting tank.  Jamna’s health has improved.  She no longer falls sick after drinking dirty water.

Most importantly, Jamna will now be able to complete her high school education.  She loves science and wants to pursue a career in this field.
