Rekha

Last year, Rekha’s mother Akla Devi felt utterly helpless.  Her husband had passed away two years ago.  She struggled to make ends meet by working on nearby farms.  Rekha and her sister Pooja would help their mother to collect water.  Rekha would frequently suffer heat stroke as result of walking for miles across the desert.

Today, Rekha speaks with great excitement about the day that she received her brand new bicycle and textbooks.  A newly constructed rainwater harvesting tanks provides clean water and a new Khadin “farming dyke” has enabled Akla Devi to grow wheat and millet for income generation.  She has planted fruits and vegetables near her water tank for nutrition.  Now Rekha is focused on her studies.  She hopes to secure a government job after graduation.
