Surja

In the past, Surja and her sister would make long treks across the desert in scorching heat to collect water for their family.   Surja would frequently face heat stroke from the intense heat.  At home, Surja would often suffer from water borne disease from drinking dirty water.

Today, Surja’s family has clean water thanks to their brand new rainwater harvesting tank.  Surja and her sister are now enrolled in school.  She and her sister commute to school on brand new bicycles.  The family’s health has improved as a result of drinking clean water.  Surja’s mother has earning extra income by growing wheat and millet on her own farmland.  A new Khadin (farming dyke) provides water for irrigation.  Surja’s mother has also planted a kitchen garden for nutrition.

Surja is focused on her studies.  One day, she hopes to travel and visit other countries.
